Every year various religious, historic and cultural events are held throughout the cities and villages of the Umbrian Valley. This section features a brief listing of the most important events that take place in this part of Umbria, so very rich with history and traditions.
Good Friday celebrations, processions and dramatizations are held in Bevagna, Montefalco, Nocera Umbra and in the villages of Cantalupo (Bevagna), Colfiorito, Fiamenga (Foligno) and Madonna della Stella (Montefalco).
Feast Days, held in celebration of a town's patron saint, take place throughout the area with solemn processions, such as the Illuminata in Trevi (27th January) and St. Feliciano in Foligno (24th January), made unique by the use of "macchine", votive and symbolic constructions. Large fairs and markets wrap up the festivities.
The feast of Corpus Domini is celebrated with particular splendour in Spello. The event features the "Infiorate", or floral compositions representing liturgical figurations and ornamental motifs.
Carnival is celebrated just about everywhere. The village of Sant'Eraclio (Foligno) takes on a truly festive air: allegorical floats and hundreds of participants dressed in costumes participate in shows and entertain visitors.
In Foligno's historical city centre,Baroque Carnival is celebrated with "feasts, jousts and other sacred and profane pleasantries" set in Foligno between the 16th and 17th centuries.
In Montefalco, during the Easter period there's the Lands of Sagrantino. In September there's Enological Week and the Grape Harvest Festival: a procession of allegorical floats tied to the grape harvest, along with songs, music and food and wine tasting.
The historical re-enactments particularly deserving of mention include Foligno's Joust of the Quintana, a seventeenth century horse tournament (held in June and September) and the Gaite Market in Bevagna which also features medieval trades (June). In Montefalco the Ox Race is a medieval re-enactment that takes place during the Montefalco August Festival. In Trevi there's the Palio dei Terzieri race and Scenes from Medieval Life(october). Nocera Umbra hosts the Palio dei Quartieri race (august) and the Satriano Cavalcade (first Saturday and Sunday in September) in memory of St. Francis' final return from Nocera Umbra to Assisi, featuring horsemen in costume who re-enact the event. Gualdo Cattaneo hosts the medieval Arrampicata race in September.
The area also hosts interesting and important cultural events. Nocera Umbra's Water Festival revives the area's ancient tradition of thermal springs in the month of August, with a calendar of events that includes both modern and classical music, theatre and the figurative arts.
Trevi in Piazza offers outdoor shows and concerts throughout the month of August.
Spello's Incontri per le strade art review, held in August, features a wide range of important cultural offerings and shows. Each year the review features an exhibition dedicated to a contemporary artist of international renown.
Gualdo Cattaneo hosts the Genius Loci festival, featuring music, food and wine throughout the months of July and August.
In Foligno, of great historical and literary importance are the Days dedicated to the study of Dante along with the Market Exhibition of ancient and rare prints and books. Of scientific interest are the Oil days (November).
Segni Barocchi, Foligno's Baroque Festival, has become one of the region's most important events. Original and stimulating theatrical and musical events are presented each year, selected from the best productions both in Italy and abroad.
Humourfest is the international humour review the brings the most biting satirists to Foligno every two years in the months of May and June.

in Gubbio is one of the oldest, if not the most remote, folkloristic events in Italy. The festival is still plays a fundamental role for the residents of Gubbio. Held annually in the month of May.
The Festival of Nations was created in Città di Castello in 1968 in order to highlight the artistic heritage of the Upper Tiber Valley, which soon became a prestigious cultural event known throughout Italy and Europe. Held every year from late August to early September.
Every year the city of Terni celebrates its patron saint with the St. Valentine's Marathon. This national running event departs from the grounds of the Casagrande school and is organized by U.S. Acli Tinarelli.
Every year in the months of July and August the city of Orvieto holds the Cantine alla ribalta food and wine review, featuring guided tours of the wine cellars along the Etruscan and Roman wine road.
